Never a Losing Season
From its beginnings, the Highland Rugby Team has never had it easy. Coach Larry Gelwix had a total of 6 players show up to the first practice, not nearly enough to comprise a team. Gelwix later recounted, “We announced that a rugby team would be started and I just assumed that everyone would love rugby as much as I do. I was wrong. No one knew what rugby was.” Following a campaign to teach people about the sport, at total of 25 players were recruited.
Two weeks after practice began in the spring of ’76, Highland Rugby was on there way to play Brigham Young University’s nationally ranked team; the only other rugby team in state. BYU won 41-6 but the Highland Rugby team surprised everyone. Since that day, the varsity Highland Rugby team has achieved 392 wins and only 9 losses, a 98 percent winning average!
