Gary Peterson

Presentation Summary - "From Batch to Flow in a High Mix/High Volume Environment"

In the early 1990s the O.C. Tanner Company embarked on a lean journey that would change the culture from a top-down, autocratic environment that processed orders in the largest batches possible, into an empowered, team-based culture that works it’s orders one-piece at a time (shipping 8,000-10,000 pieces per day). They were awarded the Shingo Prize in 1999.

This presentation will talk about the huge change in culture and processes that were required to make this transition. Productivity quadrupled, lead time went from months to hours, quality improved dramatically, every operation changed significantly, and the people are now much more powerful and happy.

You’ll hear about the obstacles to such a change, and hear practical examples of how they were overcome.

Biography

Gary has worked for The O.C. Tanner Company for 22 years. His current assignment is Vice President, Manufacturing Support Services.

Prior to working in his current roll Gary has held an impressively diverse set of jobs with the O.C. Tanner Company, including Manufacturing Change Facilitator (where he was instrumental in moving the operation from “batch” to lean, resulting in their winning the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing), Vice President of Manufacturing, Marketing Vice President of Award Development, and Vice President of Research and Professional Services.

Gary holds an MBA and a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics from Brigham Young University. He recharges his batteries by playing basketball and snowboarding with his teenaged and college-aged sons. Having successfully coached his five sons in soccer and basketball, he now enjoys coaching his 10-year old daughter – perhaps the most promising athlete of them all.

The O.C. Tanner Company helps companies appreciate people who do great work. Because celebrating great work inspires people to invent, to create, to discover. And when people are inspired, companies grow.
